Quicksilver
Once
When I was very small
I broke a thermometer
I shouldn't have been playing
With in the first place.
A stream of silver liquid
Spilled onto my palm
And I tried for quite a while
To grasp its slippery surface,
But found the tighter I squeezed
The more it oozed out,
Straining for freedom
Between clasped fingers.
Delightful to the eye;
A child's toy,
Incredible fun,
Until Mother gasped
And told me to wash my hands;
Didn't I know
That stuff was poison?
I think of Mercury sometimes
When I remember him,
How the tighter I held on,
The more he wriggled away,
Until one day, like a god
With wings on his ankles,
He was gone.
Sometimes I think of quicksilver still;
How I've learned it will lay
In a quiet pool
When gently cupped
In an open palm.
