This month's meeting of Adventures in Christian Writing is Saturday, November 18, 2006, 9:30 a.m. at the Edington Ministry Center, First Presbyterian Church, Orlando. Room 310-B.

Your writing assignment for the September meeting, as suggested by Pat Elston: This is the month of Thanksgiving. Show your gratitude by writing a thank-you note to God. You may choose to do that as an essay, poem or whatever form you choose. Limit it to one printed page and be sure to bring a copy to be turned in after you have shared your writing with the group.

Our speaker for the November 18 meeting will be Susan Sienkiewicz. Her background includes being a caregiver for Alzheimer's patients, counseling abused women, and she now has a ministry with the homeless. She has just returned from a missionary trip to Africa and is in the process of writing a book.

We will be voting for new officers for 2007 at the November meeting.

If you know of any aspiring writers who would like to be informed of our meetings let me know. Send along their email addresses, their snail mail addresses and telephone numbers.

(No meeting in December. Next time will be January 20, 2007 with speaker Chuck Dowling.)

This fall, ACA's Lecture Series, Poets and Painters, presents readings and lectures by Central Florida artists. Lectures are free, open to the public, and held in Harris House Annex at 123 Douglas Street, New Smyrna Beach.

Wednesday, November 8 7 PM
Sweet Wild World
An award winning poet and author of five books, Bill White will read from his books of found poems which he wrote from Thoreau's Journals. His first book, All Nature is My Bride, was a Book-of-the-Month and Ecology Book Club selection. He has had poems published in more than 150 different quarterlies, reviews and literary magazines. White earned his doctorate from the University of Florida and was a creative writing professor at Virginia Tech for many years.

Wednesday, November 15 7 PM
Getaway Girl
Terry Ann Thaxton's first book of poetry Getaway Girl (Story Line Press) won the 18th Annual Frederick Morgan Poetry Prize, formerly the Nicholas Roerich Prize. She holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Writing degree from Vermont College, and has published in numerous journals including Rattle, Connecticut Review, Comstock Review, Hayden's Ferry, West Branch, Tampa Review, Cimarron Review, and others.

Thaxton has received grants from the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund for Women, Youth Service America, the Florida Humanities Council, and United Arts of Central Florida. She is Assistant Professor of English at the University of Central Florida, where she teaches creative writing.

She also directs UCF's Literary Arts Partnership: Autobiography of a Community, which provides creative writing workshops to alternative populations throughout central Florida, including the Coalition for the Homeless, The Center for Drug-Free Living, PACE Center for Girls, and elementary, middle, and high schools, prisons, and domestic violence shelters. Thaxton works with 20-25 college students each semester, to design and teach creative writing workshops at several locations for the under-served. UCF students see first-hand how their knowledge of good citizenship and creative writing can enhance the lives of the under-served in our community.

The workshops improve reading and writing skills of the participants, thus improving their self-confidence, enabling them to recognize their own value as citizens, and increasing their chances of succeeding academically and/or gaining employment. At the conclusion of each 10-week workshop session, the college students and the participants create a publication of what has been written by the participants and present a public reading of their work. This project helps to develop literacy in our community through expressive writing for adults and youth who might otherwise not have the confidence or resources to attend college, and fosters self-confidence and empowerment in the participants and the students.

The Lecture Series continues with poet M.B. McLatchey (November 29) and painter Jo Sinclair (December 8).

CLARIFICATION:

Debra Tate, a freelance writer I mentioned in the last Scribbles, writes:

When I emailed you about the expense for my kids, the cost of each therapy session for the kids that is not covered is $65. This is why I need the free-lance work because my daughter needs several sessions a week for several months, and so does my son. That figure didn't have anything to do with the amount I would charge per writing job since each job is different.

I cannot tell, but I'm wondering if people reading the mention about me will think I charge $65 for a session to meet with them, or per job. Please advise if this is clear. To me, it seems like we're saying I'm charging $65 per wriritng session, especially because the amount comes right after a sentence about me seeking free-lance work.

I so much appreciate your kindness in putting this in Scribbles. If you think this needs a clarification so people don't think I'd charge $65 just to meet with them, or whatever, please print what you think would clarify this.

Thanks much.
