MAD about Words' YOGA AND WRITING workshop will inspire you by
revealing the connection between breath, body, and mind. If you're
trying to imagine what Yoga and Writing might like, one workshop
participant said: "Lots of encouragement—for both segments of the
class. I felt that it was okay I'm a neophyte—inexperienced at yoga
and not very coordinated. I also enjoyed the supportive, positive
atmosphere for writing." And another said: ""I loved Lezlie Laws.
She was wonderful. Calvin and Theresa were their usual fabulous!"

CALL FOR HOLIDAY THEMED SUBMMISSIONS

The Wild Rose Press is currently looking for stories that take place during the holidays--specifically Thanksgiving to New Years.

In order to have stories ready for this holiday season we have set the following deadlines:

We are in need of short stories (anything under 55K). The deadline for submissions to editors is November 1. We do not currently have a need for full length stories for this season, but would gladly take them and work with them for 2007.

Please see our submission guidelines on the web site for information on how to submit and for the appropriate line for your story.

Use your imagination and use holiday themes for Hanukah, Little Christmas, New Year’s Eve, even the biggest shopping day of the year, the day after Thanksgiving. Any story that fits the timeframe between November and January would be appropriate.

If you have questions, please email the appropriate editors for the line you looking at or contact us at info@thewildrosepress.com

Woodstream Writing Workshops Schedule,
Fall 2006
This fall we are offering a cornucopia of workshops and one-day events at new (and old familiar) venues around Central Florida, and we'd love to have you join us!
Included in our fall schedule are a brand-new 5-week workshop at the Winter Park Public Library, a one-day Writing Marathon in super-cool downtown Deland, a single-session Advanced Critique Intensive, and our new Mix'n'Match-Shop, a day full of writing and fun in Cocoa--as well as two 10-week workshops in our Maitland loft.
Here are the details . . .
One-Day Events
On Sunday, October 15th, join us for our third Advanced Critique Intensive. Created for writers with projects-in-progress, this full-day event provides opportunities for ten writers--all genres--to have their work examined and discussed closely both by peers and by the facilitator in one-on-one sessions as well as in an open-group session at the end of the day.
In addition to considering one another's writing, we will have several blocks of uninterrupted writing time, making this a GREAT chance to move miles ahead with your project-in-hand.
Beginning at 9:00 a.m. and continuing through 7:30 p.m., this is a fully catered event--breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, beverages, and wine. The all-inclusive cost for the day is $125. Registering ten writers total, we have room for just four more.
*****
On Saturday, October 21st, we'll be off to a great start at our newest pen-and-ink spot, cooler-than-cool downtown Deland. The Muse Book Shop, our host, will provide tons of atmosphere and inspiration as we write and play our way through a day-long "Writing Marathon."
"Fresh writing, no fears!" will be our motto as writers of all levels, working--or experimenting!--in all genres, come stretch their creative wings and FLY across an entire day of facilitated exploration, craft, and learning.
This wonderful writing whirl will start at 10:00 a.m. and continue through 4:30 p.m. We'll break mid-day for a yummy lunch at one of the terrific nearby eateries. The cost is $45 (does not include lunch), and we have seats for 14 writers.
*****
On Sunday, November 5th, our very first "Mix'n'Match-Shop" will be held in captivating Cocoa. From 9:30-5:00 we'll write and share, collaborate and compare, finding what gets our fingers flying--and why . . . while the big, blue ocean breathes herself in and out nearby.
With a schedule of structured exercises, free-writing sessions, and facilitated craft discussion, this day-long event is appropriate for new-to-intermediate writers. Expect to learn a bit about your craft, write a lot more than you expected, and discover yourself as a writer in a community of writers.
The cost of this event is $75 (plus menu item), which includes two vegetarian meals (breakfast and lunch), as well as snacks and beverages. Registering 12 writers total, we have seats available for just six more.
Weekly Writing Workshops
New Workshop for Fall!
"Creative Writing for Everyone" at the Winter Park Public Library:
Five Wednesday Evenings from 6-8:30 p.m, September 13th-October 11th
Created for writers at every level, in this five-week Amherst Writers & Artists (AWA)-based writing workshop, you will explore your unique writing voice in a supportive group environment as you work (or experiment!) in a variety of genres.
Trying your hand at fiction, poetry, memoir, or personal essay, you will identify the strengths in your own and others' writing, apply new strategies to make your work more memorable, and learn to let the "voice" of your writing energize you while it engages your readers.
Each week, you will try different writing exercises, and during our last class, a group critique session will give you the opportunity to offer a piece of your writing for close discussion.
By participating in this dynamic and playful process, you will increase both the skills that you bring to creative writing and the pleasure that you take from it!
(To register for this workshop ONLY, please contact The Lifelong Learning Institute at the Winter Park Public Library, 407-623-3279. The cost for this workshop is $150 for non-Institute members, and $110 for members. Registration for non-members opens Saturday, August 26th. Members may register now.)

Natalie Rogers needs our help!
WRITERS NEEDED
I write to ask for your help recruiting professional writers to visit
an urban Orlando elementary school to help inspire 4th and 5th
graders to write their autobiographies.
Four professional writers, preferably memoir writers, biography/
autobiography writers, and/or children's book writers, are invited to
participate as one-time "guest artists" to discuss and engage
students with the process of writing autobiography. Each guest artist
will receive a stipend of $100 to visit 2 classes for an hour each.
We'd like to give the children the opportunity to hear a professional
writer speak about the writing process and offer tips and advice to
help them with their own writing.
The project is called "We the Children" and is a program of the
Screen Actors Guild Foundation. Over a seventeen-week period, youth
participants conceive, design, write, and illustrate their
autobiographies. Finished products are bound and embossed and include
a photo and biography of the author. Two copies of each book are
published: one for the student to take home, and one for the school
library. Every project is a memorable experience for the child and
family, and concludes with a celebration in which each young author
has the opportunity to share their story with classmates, family,
friends and community members.
There is a very personal experience that the children have in
interviewing their parents and grandparents. This process offers them
the opportunity to recognize the relationship between the past and
the present. However, there is the more public implication that this
project undertakes, as well. We the Children promotes a mutual
understanding between the disparate demographics that make-up schools
and the surrounding neighborhood. While enhancing reading and writing
proficiency, every child who completes this project builds their self-
confidence, pride and a greater understanding of family, place and
community.
Four guest artists are needed to participate on any Wednesday between
August 30 and November 15. The times are as follows: 4th grade class:
9-10 AM Wednesdays5th grade class: 1-2 PM Wednesdays The school
is:Catalina Elementary (near Orange Blossom Trail and I-4)2510
Gulfstream RoadOrlando, FL 32805 Interested writers should submit a
resume to: florida@bookpals.net or call 321-229-0638 for more

Atlantic Center for the Arts’ 119th artists-in-residence program, September 4 through September 24, features dancer/choreographer Lori Belilove, deemed irresistibly joyous by The New York Times and internationally recognized as the premier interpreter of the dance of Isadora Duncan; young adult author Karen Cushman, winner of the Newbery Honor Book and the Newbery Medal for her historical novels; and musician/composer Sam Rivers, the Grammy nominated jazz legend whose 2006 CD release, Aurora, features members of his working orchestra in Orlando.

The essence of Atlantic Center’s Artists-in-Residence program is to provide talented artists the opportunity to work and collaborate with contemporary masters. Selected through a competitive application process and portfolio review by the master artists with whom they wish to work, these associate artists come from around the world, and are university professors, post-graduate students, professionals, or full-time writers, dancers, painters or composers. During their stay, the artists spend a portion of the day working with the Master Artist and their group in meetings, workshops, casual conversations and other activities. They are free to spend the remainder of their time while not with the Master Artist pursuing their own projects; studios are open to all artists 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Dancer/choreographer Lori Belilove’s direct lineage and prestigious performing career have earned her an international reputation as the premier interpreter and ambassador of the dance of Isadora Duncan. Belilove founded the Isadora Duncan Foundation for Contemporary Dance in New York City to house her school and performing company. She is in her seventh year on the faculty of the Dalcroze Institute at The Juilliard School, and through Ball State University, she is the recipient of a grant from Dance/USA to implement a Duncan curriculum. Belilove is also the leading dancer in the award-winning PBS documentary Isadora Duncan: Movement From the Soul narrated by stage and screen actress Julie Harris. Today, Belilove maintains a studio in New York City and is considered an important source for the documentation and interpretation of the Duncan technique and repertory. For more information on Lori Belilove, please visit http://www.isadoraduncan.org/About_Lori/about_lori.html

Associate Artists selected to work with Belilove include Margaret Allen, Miami, FL; Sarah Holcman, Itasca, IL; and Priscilla Machado, Wolcott, CT.

Young adult author Karen Cushman is the author of six historical novels for children and young adults. Her first book, Catherine Called Birdy, written when she was 50, was named a Newbery Honor Book, and her second, The Midwife's Apprentice, won the Newbery Medal. The Ballad of Lucy Whipple was made into a movie for television starring Glenn Close and Jena Malone. Her newest title, The Loud Silence of Francine Green, the only one of her books to be set in the 20th century, was published by Clarion in August 2006. Cushman graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Greek; she also has an MA in Human Behavior and another in Museum Studies. She lives in Vashon Island, Washington. For more information on Cushman, please visit http://www.ipl.org/div/kidspace/askauthor/cushmanbio.html

Associate Artists selected to work with Cushman include Kerry Collins, Morro Bay, CA; Deborah B. Dean, New Smyrna Beach, FL; Donna Guthrie, La Jolla, CA; Dorothy Anne Love, New Albany, OH; Llewellyn McKernan, Barboursville, WV; and Lenore V. Shapiro, Westfield, NJ.

Jazz musician/composer Sam Rivers attended Boston Conservatory and became involved in the Boston jazz scene. He moved to Miami from 1955 to 1957 to play with Billie Holiday before returning to Boston where he joined Herb Pomeroy’s Big Band. During this time, he acted as musical director for a number of R&B and Blues acts such as Wilson Pickett, B.B. King, Maxine Brown and T-Bone Walker, and in 1964 was offered the saxophone position in Miles Davis’ quintet. From 1964-1967 he recorded four albums as leader for the Blue Note label, led the Harlem Ensemble, and was composer in residence for the Harlem Opera Company. In 1970, he and his wife opened Studio Rivbea, which became a prominent living and rehearsal space for music and dance until its closing in 1979. The Rivbea Allstar Orchestra recorded two albums, Inspiration and Culmination for RCA-Victor; both received Grammy nominations in 1999 and 2000, respectively. In 2006, he released Aurora, a third CD featuring compositions for his Rivbea Orchestra, and the first CD featuring members of his working orchestra in Orlando. For more information on Sam Rivers, please visit http://www.rivbea.com/

Associate Artists selected to work with Rivers include Daniel Blake, Malden, MA;
Patricia Burgess, New York, NY; Alex Coke, Austin, TX; Carol R. Daggs, Saratoga Springs, NY; Rae Howell, Victoria, BC, Canada; Roberta Piket, Brooklyn, NY; Francesco Salomoni, Rome, Italy; and Elise Witt, Pine Lake, GA.

The residency program is sponsored, in part, through the generous sponsorship of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the State of Florida, Department of State, Division of Cultural Affairs.

On Wednesday, August 9th at 11:30am, members of the Kerouac Project of Orlando board will be participating in a ceremony to celebrate our agreement with the Orange County Regional History Center to display Jack Kerouac's final draft manuscript of, "The Dharma Bums."
As many of you know, Kerouac wrote this book in the historic College Park house. The History Center already owns the one-of-a-kind Fred DeWitt photos of Kerouac producing this document. We think this is a perfect marriage and the ideal place for the manuscript to be displayed.
The Kerouac Project acquired the original manuscript in November, 2005 from a sister of Kerouac's widow, Stella.
We look forward to seeing you there!

From Publishers Weekly July 26
Partnering with the online entertainment company FanLib, HarperCollins is unveiling a contest for romance readers that invites fans to create an original story on the Web. Sponsored by the house's Avon Books imprint, the "Express Your Desires" contest is scheduled to launch on August 23 and will unfold over an eight-week period.
After fans vote on their favorite story premise, listed at the contest's homepage at http://avonfanlit.com/, weekly submissions will be judged by a group of Avon authors. The judges, among them Julia Quinn and Victoria Alexander, will also have their books (along with other select Avon authors) plugged on the contest's homepage. The highest-rated extracts will then become part of the unfolding story, which Avon will publish as an e-book at the close of the contest.
Speaking to the contest, HC CEO Jane Friedman said the outreach "enables us to reach readers and aspiring authors through a unique online community, and bring them inside the writing process to interact with their favorite authors and our talented editorial staff."
