MAD about Words offers THE SHORT FICTION CRANK - - a rare opportunity to work in a small group with a master of the short story form. Get the kind of insights you can only get from a working writer.

Over five weeks, with the help of a small group of other writers, and under the guidance of award-winning author PHILIP F. DEAVER you will write a single short story. No old work allowed. Not much talk. Time to dig. Be brave. This workshop features two sessions, one at the beginning, one at the end with online mentoring in the middle weeks.

After the final group session, with whatever revisions result from the feedback, you can present online the final draft to Philip Deaver for critique.

If you tend to start stories that go nowhere this workshop is for you.

Saturday, October 28, 2006 and Saturday, December 2, 2006; 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

Wham Bam Poetry Slam 3 at ACA

Poet or not, you are invited to the WHAM BAM POETRY SLAM 3, presented on Saturday, October 28 at 7 PM, Atlantic Center for the Arts, Harris Theater, 1414 Art Center Avenue. This third annual slam, hosted by the Poetry Corner and the Tomoka Poets depends on active audience participation as well as good poets and fine judges. Poets may sign up by phone, email ahead of time, or sign up on Saturday night at 6:30 PM. However, there is a limit of 15 poets and there are only eight spots left, so it is suggested that poets phone 386.423.1753 or email mmcbride@atlanticcenterforthearts.org as soon as possible.

There will be three 5-minute challenges with 2 minutes to read poems afterwards. The three judges and an appreciative audience will determine who the winners are. Poets who reach the top three spots will receive cash along with ACA membership and poetry books. The cash awards are as follows: $75, $50 and $25. All participating poets will receive ACA t-shirts.

There is a reception following the challenge, and all poets are invited to read at the open mic session after final awards are presented. Poetry books by ACA associates will be given to the first 50 audience members.

For more information, phone Mary McBride, Community Programs & Operations Manager, Atlantic Center for the Arts at Harris House, 386-423-1753 or email mmcbride@atlanticcenterforthearts.org

The next monthly meeting of Adventures in Christian Writing will be Saturday, October 21, 2006, 9:30 a.m. at the Edington Ministry Center, First Presbyterian Church, Orlando. Room 310-B. Come early for some refreshments.

Your writing assignment for the September meeting, as suggested by Don Royster: An essay, poem or story on the importance of church in your life. Limit it to one printed page and be sure to bring a copy to be turned in after you have shared your writing with the group.

Our speaker for the October 21 meeting will be Joy Wallace Dickinson. Many of you have been enjoying her column, "Florida Flashbacks" in the Orlando Sentinel on Sundays. My husband and I have just finished reading her wonderful book, Orlando, City of Dreams. I have asked her to bring along some copies because I know several of you will want it for your home library. It brings a wealth of information about our chosen community and its history.

If you know of any aspiring writers who would like to be informed of our meetings let me know. Send along their email addresses, their snail mail addresses and telephone numbers.

Keep praying for Nancy Allen, a talented writer and one of our dedicated members, as she recovers from surgery.

Orlando Writer seeks Room for Rent.

I am looking to rent a room for approximately one year, preferably between downtown and the Waterford Lakes area. I work during the day, and keep a fairly active schedule on the weekends.

I have worked at Home Depot/ Hughes Supply for over six years, and have many references within the local writing community. You can email me at Michael.Whisenant@hdsupply.com , or call me in the evenings at 407-538-1111.
